About Ugii Lake
Ögii Lake (Ugii Nuur) is a freshwater lake in Ögiinuur soum of Arkhangai Province, in the Orkhon River valley. It covers about 25–27 km², stretches roughly 8 km long and 5 km wide, reaches a maximum depth of 15–16 m with an average of about 6.6 m, and lies at 1,337 m above sea level. Some 40–50% of the lake is shallower than 3 m. The Khögshin Orkhon River feeds it from the west.
Recognised as an important breeding and staging site for waterbirds, Ögii Lake was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1998, and BirdLife International lists it as an Important Bird Area. Rare and congregating species such as the Dalmatian pelican, swan goose and whooper swan are recorded here. The lake also holds roach, perch and pike, which makes it a favourite with anglers.
The lake sits close to major sites of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Turkic memorial steles of Khöshöö Tsaidam and the ruins of the Uyghur capital Khar Balgas, with Kharkhorin further south. That makes Ögii a natural overnight stop on central Mongolia trips — for fishing, birdwatching, or pitching a tent on the shore. Ger camps line the lake, and many of them close outside the summer season.
Top attractions
Fishing & boating
Fishing for pike and perch is the lake's most popular pastime, and some shoreline camps offer boats and fishing gear.
Birdwatching
A Ramsar-listed breeding and staging site for waterbirds — bring binoculars for a chance to spot Dalmatian pelicans, swan geese and whooper swans.
Khöshöö Tsaidam monuments
About 25–30 km south of the lake, the site of the 8th-century Turkic memorial steles of Bilge Khagan and Kul Tegin — home to the famous Orkhon inscriptions in Old Turkic runic script.
Khar Balgas (Ordu-Baliq)
The ruins of Ordu-Baliq, capital of the Uyghur Khaganate (744–840), on the west bank of the Orkhon River in Khotont soum, about 27 km north of Kharkhorin.
Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu Monastery
About 70 km south of the lake, the site of Karakorum, capital of the 13th-century Mongol Empire, and home to Erdene Zuu, one of Mongolia's oldest Buddhist monasteries.
Getting there
Ögii Lake lies roughly 350–430 km west of Ulaanbaatar depending on the route, about 6–7 hours by car. With Kharkhorin about 70 km to the south, it makes a convenient overnight stop on the way to Kharkhorin, Tsetserleg or Tsenkher Hot Springs. A private car, rented 4x4 or tour operator is the easiest way to get there; check conditions on the stretch from the main road to the shore and camps in advance.
Best time to visit
Summer (June–August) is best — most ger camps are open and it's the ideal time for fishing, boating and relaxing on the shore; some visitors swim at this time. Spring and autumn migration draws large numbers of waterbirds, rewarding for birdwatchers, though it is cool and windy and many camps may be closed. In winter the lake freezes and most camps shut.
Good to know
- This is a protected Ramsar site — check permits, seasonal bans and limits before fishing, and release any rare fish you catch.
- During the nesting season keep away from shoreline nesting areas, stay quiet, and bring binoculars.
- Many ger camps around the lake only open in summer — if you're visiting in spring or autumn, check that your stay is open before you go.
- The shore is open and exposed — bring a windproof jacket, sun hat and insect repellent, and always pack out your rubbish.
