About Khuvsgul lake
Lake Khuvsgul is Mongolia's largest and deepest freshwater lake, reaching a depth of about 262 metres, a length of 136 km and a width of up to 36 km. Sitting at roughly 1,645 metres above sea level at the southern edge of the Siberian taiga and the foot of the Sayan Mountains, its exceptionally clear, deep-blue water has earned it the beloved nickname the "Blue Pearl of Mongolia."
Khuvsgul holds a large share of Mongolia's fresh water and is famous for being clean enough to drink straight from the lake. One of the oldest lakes in the world, its outflow travels via the Eg (Egiin) River and eventually feeds Lake Baikal in Russia. The vast surrounding wilderness is a protected national park, home to musk deer, elk, brown bear, wolf, argali and other rare wildlife.
Khatgal village at the southern tip of the lake is the main base for travellers, opening the door to boat trips, horseback riding, taiga treks and visits to the Tsaatan reindeer-herding people. Getting there
Lake Khuvsgul lies roughly 780–900 km from Ulaanbaatar by road (depending on the route), usually driven over about a day and a half to two days with an overnight stop in Murun.
