About Khujirt
Khujirt is the centre of Khujirt soum in Övörkhangai Province, best known for its hot springs and spa sanatoriums. It lies roughly 380–420 km from Ulaanbaatar and about 84–88 km north of the provincial capital Arvaikheer, just south of the ancient capital Kharkhorin in the Orkhon River basin. The soum was founded in 1931 under the name Khaluun-Us ("Hot Water"), a name that reflects its hot springs, within Arkhangai Province; in 1934 it moved to Övörkhangai and was renamed Khujirt.
Hot water of around 39–60°C rises in the soum centre, and a number of spa sanatoriums and resorts are built around it. Visitors come to bathe in the hot mineral water and take mud treatments, traditionally used for rest, recovery and general wellbeing. In 1999 the government resolved to develop the Khujirt sanatorium as a tourism hub for the Orkhon River region.
Khujirt sits close to the UNESCO-listed Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, so a spa stay combines naturally with Kharkhorin, Erdene Zuu Monastery, Tövkhön Monastery and the Orkhon Waterfall. At more than 1,600 m above sea level, its cool air and wide-open steppe make it an easy place to slow down for a few days away from the city.
Top attractions
Khujirt hot springs
Hot water of around 39–60°C rising in the soum centre, used by local sanatoriums and resorts for mineral baths and mud treatments (services vary by property).
Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu Monastery
North of Khujirt lies the site of the ancient capital Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery, part of the UNESCO-listed Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape.
Tövkhön Monastery
A mountaintop monastery west-northwest of Khujirt, founded in the mid-17th century by Zanabazar, the first Bogd Gegeen.
Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan)
West of Khujirt in Bat-Ölzii soum, the falls drop into a gorge the Orkhon River cut through ancient volcanic lava layers. Flow is usually strongest after the summer rains.
Getting there
Khujirt lies roughly 380–420 km west-southwest of Ulaanbaatar. It can be reached by heading south from Kharkhorin town (about 35–55 km depending on the route) or north from Arvaikheer (about 84–88 km). Most visitors travel by private car, rented 4x4 or an organised tour, often on the same route as Kharkhorin and the Orkhon Valley. Side trips to Tövkhön Monastery and the Orkhon Waterfall involve dirt tracks. (Road conditions and travel times change with the season — check before you go.)
Best time to visit
The warm season (June–September) is the most convenient — roads and weather are favourable and it is easy to combine with the Orkhon Valley sights. Summers are cool and winters severe. Sanatorium schedules vary, so if you plan a winter visit, confirm opening times in advance.
Good to know
- Each sanatorium differs in services (mineral baths, mud, meals), packages and operating season — compare and confirm the details before booking.
- Before hot-spring baths or mud treatments, check with your doctor about your health (heart, blood pressure, pregnancy and so on).
- Pack a swimsuit, sandals, a towel, personal medication and warm layers — it is a high-altitude area, so nights are cool even in summer.
- If you plan to add Tövkhön Monastery or the Orkhon Waterfall, allow a few days and use a high-clearance vehicle with an experienced driver for the dirt tracks.
