About Tsenkher Hot Springs
Tsenkher Hot Springs is a natural thermal spring in Tsenkher soum of Arkhangai Province, on the northern slopes of the Khangai Mountains. It lies roughly 25–30 km southeast of the provincial capital Tsetserleg, at about 1,780–1,860 m above sea level, in a valley ringed by forested hills. Water at the source reaches 85–86°C, making it one of Mongolia's hottest springs.
The water is mildly alkaline and, according to published descriptions, contains hydrogen sulphide, silica and fluoride among other minerals. Local people have long used the spring in the traditional way to ease joint and muscle aches and general fatigue. Ger camps and resorts surround the spring, with both outdoor and indoor pools and baths; the pool water is far cooler than the source and kept at a comfortable soaking temperature.
Tsenkher is used in all four seasons. In summer the hills turn green and are ideal for hiking and horseback riding, while in winter a soak in an open-air pool surrounded by snowy mountains is a memorable experience. It combines easily with Tsetserleg, Taikhar Rock, Ögii Lake and Kharkhorin in Övörkhangai on a single central Mongolia trip.
Top attractions
Thermal pools
Soaking in an open-air pool with views of forested hills is the main reason to come. Indoor pools and baths are also available, so you can bathe whatever the weather.
Tsetserleg & Zaya Gegeen Monastery
The provincial capital, some 25–30 km away. Zaya Gegeen Monastery, one of Mongolia's major pre-revolutionary monasteries, houses the Arkhangai Provincial Museum in its temple buildings.
Taikhar Rock
A massive rock on the north bank of the Khoid Tamir River in Ikh Tamir soum, about 22 km from Tsetserleg. It bears inscriptions in many scripts — Old Turkic, Uyghur, Mongolian, Tibetan, Chinese and more — and has been under state protection since 1994.
Hiking & horseback riding in the Khangai hills
The forested hills and meadow valleys around the spring are good for walks and horseback rides, and for a glimpse of local herding life.
Getting there
Tsenkher Hot Springs lies roughly 470–500 km west of Ulaanbaatar, about 7–9 hours by car. The road from Ulaanbaatar to Tsetserleg is paved the entire way. Coming from Ulaanbaatar, travellers usually turn off at the Tsenkher soum centre and drive about 24 km south, or approach from Tsetserleg (25–30 km). Public buses run from Ulaanbaatar to Tsetserleg, but you will need a private car or taxi for the last leg. Conditions on the final stretch vary with season and weather — check before you go.
Best time to visit
The spring is used year-round. Summer (June–August) brings green hills and is best for hiking and riding. Autumn is cool, golden and quieter. Winter (November–March) offers the unique experience of an open-air soak in the snow, but it is cold and roads can be harder, so plan ahead. Weekends and holidays get busy.
Good to know
- Water at the source is around 85°C — bathe only in the designated pools and baths, never touch the source or supply channels, and keep children supervised at all times.
- Pack a swimsuit, flip-flops, a towel and warm layers — at around 1,800 m, evenings can be cool even in summer.
- Don't stay in the hot water too long — take breaks and drink water. If you have a heart or blood-pressure condition, are pregnant or have other health concerns, ask your doctor before bathing.
- The final stretch of road can get difficult in winter or after rain, so a high-clearance vehicle is wise — and book ahead for weekends and holidays.
