About Sognogor river
Sögnögör is the valley of the Sögnögör River in Batsümber soum of Töv Province, roughly 75–90 km north of Ulaanbaatar, and one of the capital's best-known summer-retreat areas. Like the Terelj River, it is one of the mountain rivers fed by the Khentii Mountains.
A fast river tumbling over large boulders, woods along its banks and open meadows make the valley a quiet place to get away from the city and fall asleep to the sound of water. Summer houses, resorts and ger camps line the river, so it suits both a comfortable overnight stay with family or friends and a night in a tent. For anyone looking for a getaway close to the city, it is a good alternative to Terelj.
Visitors come for riverside walks, fishing, hiking and mountain biking. Further upstream the valley narrows and turns rocky, and hikers and cyclists head on into the upper valley. Summer weekends are busy, so if you want peace and quiet, pick a weekday.

Sögnögör River Valley
A fast mountain river tumbling over large boulders, lined with woods and meadows — summer houses and resorts are strung out along its banks.
Camping and fishing
Pitching a tent by the river and fishing within the permitted rules are among the most popular reasons to visit.
Getting there
Sögnögör lies north of Ulaanbaatar. Take the road via Sanzai to the Batsümber soum centre, then follow roughly 9–12 km of dirt track into the valley. It is about 75–80 km to the mouth of the valley and further as you go upstream, so allow 75–90 km depending on where you stay — roughly 1.5–2 hours by car. A private car is the easiest option; because the final stretch is unpaved, a high-clearance vehicle is wise after rain.
Best time to visit
Summer (June–August) is best — the riverside camps and resorts are open and it's peak season for camping and lazy days by the water. Heavy rain in July–August can flood the river, so keep an eye on the forecast. In winter and early spring the dirt track gets harder going, so check that your accommodation is open before you set off.
Good to know
- The last ~9–12 km beyond the Batsümber soum centre is dirt, mud and stone and turns boggy after rain — a high-clearance vehicle is best.
- After heavy rain the Sögnögör can rise fast and has exceeded flood level before. Pitch tents well back from the water and don't drive through the river.
- Summer weekends get crowded. Take all your rubbish home and keep the riverbanks clean — the simplest way to protect the valley.
- Bring food, drinking water, camping gear and warm layers from the city — nights in the mountain valley are cool.
